Flash iPlayer is Launched

Well it’s only another piece of the deal, and I will no doubt be updating the blog over the next few days on the fundamentals – but here’s some good news for OSX/Linux users. iPlayer will now work with Flash on your system. GNU users may not be so happy. I haven’t tested it with gnash yet… so could someone let me know if that works?

Here’s the URL. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer not bad quality either!

Many thanks to the efforts of the BBC team, Becky Hogge (The Open Rights Group) and Gerry Gavigan (The Open Source Consortium) – and anyone else involved in the iPlayer development / petitioning.

Wow, so it has! I wondered if they’d actually do it, and they have!

    Well done BBC!

    Doesn’t work on Gnash.
Doesn’t work on older versions of Flash.

Only reported working versions are Adobe Flash 9.

Note the EULA for the above expressly prohibits tablets not running Windows, and Media Centre PCs not running Windows.

So if you want iPlayer on your Media Centre better fork over the nearly £200 for Windows Vista, and beef up your machine somewhat. Nice to see the BBC helping contribute to *increasing* carbon emissions.

    Still no download option.
I would not say “Well Done” by a long way. Why precisely is the BBC using Legal Terms in EULAs to limit platform interoperability? No technical reasons for this what-so-ever other than to promote more Microsoft software, what ever happened to impartiality?

    Andy,

I don’t think the situation is yet ‘idyllic,’ yet one must understand that any change involves a gradual change, rather than a sudden shift.

Luckily the BBC Dept for “New Media” hasn’t got complete control (with their ex-MS employees) and the BBC Trust are acting in everyone’s best interests by checking their decisions.

I hope this helps remedy your annoyances.
